DR. STEVEN WALSH (SLEEP SCIENTIST)

Steve is one of Night Club’s sleep scientists and holds a Doctorate from the University of Oxford’s Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute. After spending nine years as a firefighter, his experience working night shifts motivated him to pursue a career in scientific research, in order to understand the effect that lack of sleep has on the human body. Steve travels across the UK along with Night Club’s facilitators to provide expert advice and 1:1 consultations with the programme’s participants.

Steve is passionate about disseminating everything he learned during his PHD to other night shift workers in order to help them cope better with the challenges of shift work and lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

PROFESSOR RUSSELL FOSTER (SLEEP SCIENTIST)

Professor Russell Foster is Night Club’s lead Sleep Scientist, overseeing the development of the programme’s evidence-based content. He is head of the University of Oxford’s world-leading Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute, as well as the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology.

Much of Professor Foster’s academic work examines how light regulates our circadian rhythm (sleep cycle). The human body’s circadian rhythm is a 24 hour cycle that detects the gradual change in light during the day and night to signal to our brains when we need to sleep and wake up. Studies have shown that light plays a critical role in synchronising our body clocks, even suggesting that people who work night shifts may not ever be able to fully adapt to nocturnal hours. Professor Foster’s research includes wider neurobiology and the implications that disrupted sleep patterns can have on our performance, productivity, physical and mental health.
