NEWS AND UPDATES ON SHIFT WORK AND SLEEP HEALTH
In today’s 24/7 world, work doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. From healthcare professionals keeping hospitals operational to delivery drivers ensuring goods reach their destinations, millions of people perform critical tasks outside standard working hours. While shift work allows modern life to continue without pause, it comes with significant hidden costs – particularly when it comes to health.
Working shifts can be very difficult for the body and mind. Night workers often speak about finding it difficult to sleep during the day or on their time off. Working shifts can take a toll on your mind and body in ways that aren’t always obvious at first. Whether you’re working through the night, rotating between early and late shifts or managing irregular hours, your sleep pattern is often the first thing to suffer. And when sleep is disrupted, your mental health can quickly follow.
Working nights is essential for many industries, but it can take a serious toll on health and wellbeing. Unlike day workers, those on night shifts are fighting against their body’s natural circadian rhythm, which is tuned to be awake in daylight and asleep at night. Studies show that almost half of night workers regularly get less than six hours of sleep a day, and poor sleep is linked to fatigue, lower concentration, and long-term health risks.
While most of us sleep, more than 8.7 million people in the UK keep hospitals running, stock grocery shelves, patrol the streets and ensure the wheels of modern life never stop turning. This “hidden army” of night shift workers is essential – but often invisible. And the cost of their service? A growing body of research reveals the toll is steep, with serious consequences for both physical and mental health.
